Congratulations to fellow Wichita resident Clare Vanderpool on her recent award of the 2011 Newberry Medal for best book.
This 346 page novel for 5th - 8th graders is sure to become a favorite for all Kansans. A work of historical fiction, it is set in Southeastern Kansas in 1917 and 1936. For a newcomer to Kansas like me, it quickly acquaints the readers to oddities such as the correct pronunciation of the ArKANSAS river, hedge apples, and other assorted Kansas history.
The story is one of discovery and adventure, sin and hope, sorrow and redemption. While not Christian fiction, when read across the lines of fallen human beings and Christ's salvation history, the story reveals a lot about our character and what we could be.
The book will soon be available in our school library.
