Cold Weather Policy

This year has been very mild weather so far. I am sure that eventually it will get cold and probably even snow. I do know this: It's much warmer than last year.

Here's a reprint of an article I posted in November 2010 as I encountered my first Kansas winter. It explains our cold weather policy which is inline with the other area school districts.

As the cold winter gets closer, here are some tips -- that I'm finding out the hard way.

1) Leave ten minutes earlier so you aren't late to school. I used a CD case to scrape the frost off my windows this morning, which took about 10 minutes more than I had planned.

2) Buy an ice scraper. It probably works better than a CD case.

3) Be sure to layer your student in clothes - Don't forget to send a jacket.

Several parents have asked what our inclement weather policy is:

1) If its snowing or raining, students will stay inside; If it begins sprinkling after students are already out, we will bring them in early.

2) Students should bring any jackets, hats, or gloves to lunch before recess time. The teachers will ensure that they have everything.

3) If the windchill temperature hits 19 degrees or lower, even if it's sunny outside, students will remain inside. The "REAL-FEEL" temperature indicator for BLS is always displayed in the upper right hand corner of this website.
